Asda is set to develop a £20m import centre at Teesport near Middlesbrough.

The retailer said that the centre would create 300 new jobs and allow its non-food items to be delivered straight to the port for distribution to its UK stores.

It added that the facility would also help ease congestion in southern container ports like Felixstowe and Southampton and save two million road miles a year by shipping 70% of its distribution direct to Teesport.
