The chain has taken over 50,000 sq ft of space at a site in Lutterworth where it will co-ordinate the return of goods to manufacturers, or sell them on ­ usually to overseas buyers.
Asda general manager for electronics Ged Taylor said it was essential to have an efficient returns system in place as non food items such as videos, DVDs and TVs became an increasingly important part of the mix.
Separately, under a new customer repair service for TVs launching next month engineers will visit customers' homes, said Taylor. "In many cases, the goods are not actually faulty ­ the customer needs help on site."
