Asda Weston-super-Mare

0 The aisles were packed with shoppers at this Asda branch and staff were busily restocking shelves to keep up with demand. There were a few packing trolleys in various aisles but they were being unloaded quickly and staff did their best to keep out of the path of shoppers. Availability was very good and each time our shopper asked for the whereabouts of an item, she was guided to the location by a friendly and polite assistant. The white grapefruit was not stocked.

morrisons Stratford-upon-Avon

0 This Morrisons branch was the only store to provide a full basket and was on course to win this week's Top Store award. However, it was let down at the checkout. With her unhappy four-month-old baby under her arm, our shopper had to pack all of her shopping while the checkout assistant just watched, without offering assistance. Other members of staff on the sales floor were more helpful and the store was impressively clean and tidy.

We visited on 16 May at 3.15pm. Our shop lasted 46 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was four minutes.

sainsbury's Kirkintilloch, East Dunbartonshire

1 The organic yoghurt was sold out but availability was fairly strong elsewhere in the store. Customer service was very good and staff were chatty and enthusiastic. The floor, fixtures and fittings were clean and the store was easy to navigate with clear signage. There was a variety of products on promotion, but none affecting this week's list. Of the 14 checkouts, only eight were operating but this was sufficient as there were not many shoppers in the store.

We visited on 16 May at 8.55pm. Our shop lasted 58 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was three minutes.

tesco Gateshead

0 This Tesco was looking quite dated but it was clean and the aisles were clear of litter and packing trolleys. A section of the store was separated by a dividing wall that made navigating the aisles more challenging, and the checkouts were awkwardly located either side of the partition. Of the 25 checkouts, 13 were open but this was not enough as our shopper had to queue for five minutes before her items were scanned. The organic yoghurt was not stocked.

We visited on 16 May at 9.05am. Our shop lasted one hour and 12 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was nine minutes.

waitrose Eastbourne, East Sussex

2 The wide aisles and well-stocked shelves made this Waitrose a very pleasant store to shop in. Staff were smartly dressed and helpful and products were grouped logically. Special offers were limited and the required size of stuffed olives was not available. The checkout operator had to change the till roll on her machine but apologised to our shopper for the longer wait. She mistakenly charged our shopper for an organic loaf instead of the normal variety.

We visited on 16 May at 10.25am. Our shop lasted 44 minutes. Time spent at the checkout was nine minutes.
