Bill Capper, managing director of the family-owned Spar company Capper & Co, is to be succeeded by Robert Upton on May 1.
Capper will move to the position of executive chairman.
He has led the company, which operates the Spar franchise for South Wales, the M4 region and the south west of England, since 1968 following the premature death of his father and founder of the business, John Capper. Capper & Co now supplies 500 Spar stores, including 110 Spar stores within its own retail division.
Capper has also had the very rare honour of heading Spar’s National Guild - the ultimate authority within Spar’s
democratic guild system - for two terms.
As head of the board, which includes an equal number of retail and wholesaler directors, he has led decisions that affect Spar members nationally, including the annual marketing programme.
Upton joined Capper & Co in 1990 as company accountant. He has been finance director since 1997.
Upton was previously finance director of Hillsdown Holdings subsidiary Pendragon Furniture.
“Robert has been a key member of the team at Capper & Co, which over recent years has delivered significant growth in store numbers, sales and profits,” said Capper.
“His appointment as MD will ensure this growth continues and that the company’s future and that of our 2,400 very valued employees is secured.”
