Tesco has appointed Peter Durose category director for produce in the wake of senior management changes announced last week.
He replaces Steve Murrells who was promoted to chief executive officer of T& S Stores, the convenience store chain Tesco bought 18 months ago.
Murrells has stepped into the shoes of Colin Holmes, who has been promoted to head Tesco’s convenience store business (The Grocer, March 13, p5).
Durose joins shortly after the announcement by Tesco of a campaign to encourage producers to consider growing crops in the winter, supported by the introduction of new technology.
Tesco has pledged to buy such crops, which would improve availability of vegetables such as tomatoes and lettuce and fruits such as strawberries. Durose will aim to continue the development of the scheme.
He will return from secondment to Tesco Malaysia, where he has been working for the last three years as commercial director.
His previous Tesco roles have included category manager for fruits and horticulture.
