Darren Blackhurst, Tesco’s commercial director for Tesco Thailand, will join Asda’s executive board as food trading director in January 2006.
In a new role for the company, Blackhurst will take responsibility for fresh food, grocery, beer, wines and spirits, meat, fish & poultry and bakery, reporting to Asda COO David Cheesewright.
Blackhurst joined Tesco as a graduate trainee in 1988, starting out predominantly in fresh food buying roles. In 1995 he took up an international role as senior buyer for health and beauty and household for Tesco’s Catteau venture in France.
In 1997 he returned to the UK to become category director for frozen food and then health and beauty, before being appointed commercial director for Tesco Thailand in 2002, leading a team of more than 300 people.
Stuart Machin is to join Asda early next year as central operations director, coordinating Asda’s retail operations. He replaces Glenn Bowles who is moving to become regional managing director for the north.
Machin joined Tesco in 2003 and started off running Tesco’s Extra format in the south before moving to a strategic role at head office. He was then appointed operations director.
Prior to Tesco, Machin spent 16 years at Sainsbury in several roles, latterly as regional MD for the south.
The restructure, originally announced in June as part of Asda’s efforts to streamline its operations, also saw the return of Andy Clarke as retail director in September.
Cheesewright returned to the UK in October after a 12-month stint as chief operating officer at Wal-Mart in Canada.
Last month Asda named category and strategy director Angela Spindler executive MD of George.
Andrew Dixon, former head of Tesco Clubcard, has been appointed deputy MD of supermarkets for Italian retail giant PAM. Dixon will be primarily responsible for a revamp of the supermarket business, which employs 4,700 staff and has a turnover of 11bn. He will also have a role within core strategy development across the group.
Greene King has appointed Ian Bull as group finance director. Bull joins Greene King from BT Retail where he is chief executive of enterprises. He takes up his new role in January, replacing Michael Shallow who announced in April that he was leaving.
Chris Bould, retail director for logistics group Christian Salvesen, has left the company. A spokeswoman for Christian Salvesen confirmed that Bould had departed and that a replacement had not as yet been appointed.
