Makro staff are set don their aprons as part of an initiative to help the wholesaler understand customers better.

Under the scheme, called Beyond Back to the Floor, staff will work in restaurants, pubs and caterers to develop closer ties with customers.

It is already operating in the Charlton depot in south east London and will roll out across Makro's 33 depots in the next few months.

"Equipping staff with the right skills and understanding will prove crucial in helping our customers," said Makro MD Hannes Floto.

Adam Field, Makro Charlton's assistant general manager, spent two days at The Lotus floating restaurant in London Docklands.
