Morrisons has confirmed that it is closing three of its distribution centres.

The supermarket group said that its sites at Aylesford, Bristol and Warrington faced the risk of closure and the 2,500 staff employed there would be encouraged to apply for alternative employment in the company.

“The company is now aiming for a distribution network which meets the needs of the business going forward and reduces the additional running costs necessarily incurred while servicing both Morrisons and Safeway stores,” it added.

The retailer is facing possible strikes over the closures and is currently in talks with unions to avert the action.
