Asda has finally agreed a deal to take over the running of the last Safeway store in Northern Ireland not yet under its control.
The store in Downpatrick was bought by local
business couple John and Helen Miskelly earlier this month, after Asda refused to take it as part of its deal with Morrisons to buy the other 12 Safeway stores in Northern Ireland because of subsidence problems in the car park.
Now Asda is to lease the store from the Miskellys. The store will close today for a short-term re-badging exercise to allow it to trade temporarily in the run-up to Christmas. It will close again in January for the full Asda conversion process.
Asda confirmed it would be dealing with the subsidence problem early next year.
