John Pattison is taking over from Ian Connell as Appleby Westward's managing director.

The former retail managing director for Somerfield's west division takes the reins from Connell, who is retiring from the Spar wholesaler after nine years at the helm, on 22 April.

"We are very pleased to appoint John to his new role," said Leo Crawford, chairman of Appleby Westward. "He has over 20 years' UK food retail experience, latterly as retail MD for Somerfield in a region with more than two hundred stores.

"We are confident this appointment will help Appleby Westward grow its ambitions, including the potential to develop the Eurospar format, which has been so successful in many other European countries."

For the past three months he has been working on a handover with Connell. Before Somerfield, Pattison was a regional director at Kwik Save.

Crawford thanked Connell for his commitment and dedication to Appleby Westward over the years. "Ian leaves Appleby Westward with the good wishes of his colleagues across the BWG Group, which owns Appleby Westward," he said.

Connell, who leaves on 7 May, said he intended to concentrate on his family-run racing team sponsored by Spar, which competes in the Fun Cup.

In the year ending December 2007, the latest period for which figures are available, Appleby Westward's turnover fell from £146m to £138m, while operating profits fell from £3.6m to £2m.
