Asda stores rushed in extra stock to cope with a threatened five-day depot strike, called off at the 11th hour on Thursday.

Asda president Andy Bond met the GMB union on Wednesday in order to thrash out collective bargaining rights at depots.

An agreement was signed on Thursday, establishing a new National Joint Council. Meetings will be held twice a year to review issues.

The union will have access to all 24 depots.

Negotiations will now occur at local level on the modernisation of collective bargaining agreements.
