Tesco has been forced to scrap plans for what would have been its biggest-ever mixed use development.

The development in Tolworth, Surrey, would have included 835 flats, a 60,000 sq ft store and 7,800 sq ft of additional retail space.

Tesco had also planned to build a bridge with a walkway and travelators linking it to the rest of the town centre.

The 13-acre site is less than two miles from another Tesco Extra store in New Malden.

Local protesters said the creation of a second superstore would cause traffic chaos and destroy local businesses. A spokesman for Tesco said it would submit revised plans.
