Allwright joined Tesco more than 20 years ago and has been a soft drinks buyer for the past five. Her buying roles have included clothing, stationery and household categories. She says the most enjoyable aspects of her job are working with key suppliers to deliver plans that can grow both businesses as well as listening to customers.

Kevin Harrison



Harrison joined Jacksons earlier this year with the remit to drive impulse sales. He is responsible for soft drinks, crisps, nuts, biscuits and confectionery. He moved from Costcutter where he was a trading manager and has spent eight years at Nisa Today’s, where he became trading controller for Nisaway.

Debbie Clarke


Clarke joined the CWS’s former food manufacturing group as a graduate trainee 14 years ago, working in the hot beverages sector. In 1997 she became a category buyer for hot beverages for the Co-operative Group. Following a stint as category buyer for soft drinks she was promoted to category manager for soft drinks, fruit juice, hot beverages and biscuits in 2000. Clarke has a team of three buyers, one merchandiser and one marketing manager reporting to her in this role and it is her responsibility to ensure profits and revenue streams are delivered in line with budget requirements.

Peter Burleigh


Burleigh has been in his present role at Morrisons for four years. He is responsible for all soft drinks, including fruit juice, water, squash, carbonates and mixers. Previously he was buyer for household and toiletries at Morrisons. Burleigh had a spell with the company in the 1980s, rejoining in 1995.

Matt Spencer



Spencer joined Asda in May in his current role. Prior to this he was at Sainsbury for over three years, moving from coffee buyer to trading manager in soft drinks and crisps & snacks. His career also includes stints at the Arcadia Group and Planet Hollywood in merchandising and finance roles.

Andrew Thain


Thain joined Booker in 2001 as biscuit, preserve and bread buyer after eight years at Sainsbury, which included buying roles in olive oil, haircare and instore bakery. In his current role he has been instrumental in developing a more consumer focused approach to the category.
