Cheyne, who moves from his job as group development director, replaces new business development director Keith Jackson who is leaving.
Cheyne, who joined Somerfield in November, will sit on Somerfield’s executive committee and report directly to executive chairman John von Spreckelsen.
He will be responsible for convenience, forecourts and franchising. As a former commercial director at Alldays,
in charge of developing franchise and new business opportunities, he has many years’ experience in the c-store sector. He will retain the post of managing director of Scottish Mace chain Aberness, which he took when it was acquired by Somerfield in March.
Following his appointment, Cheyne said Somerfield planned to tap into Aberness’s expertise and experience of c-store and franchise retailing (The Grocer, March 20, p4).
Jackson’s departure follows nearly two years as new business development director, managing Somerfield’s franchise strategy. He also oversaw the launch of the Somerfield & Martin’s dual branded stores.
Before that he was group buying director and has been supply chain director and commercial director for buying.
