Asda is facing a legal battle with high street optician Specsavers over adverts by the supermarket claiming it offered shoppers the chance to “be a real spec saver”.

The High Court yesterday ruled that a full trial would take place in April, with Asda accused of ‘copycat advertising’. The retailer also used a logo for its glasses adverts that is not unlike the Specsavers logo.

Specsavers had asked for the trial to take place in January. However, Asda was granted a delay – on the grounds that its lawyers will be stacking shelves over Christmas.
