There’s an air of excitement and expectation about the Musgrave Budgens Londis drinks buying team as it gets to grips with a combined portfolio for Londis and Budgens.
Martin Swadling, category manager for beers, wines and spirits, heads up the team and says they are looking forward to the next couple of years.
“It’s an exciting time with lots to do,” says Swadling. “Musgrave has very bold and ambitious plans and the impulse business, which includes drinks, is a key sector and we will benefit from that.”
Christine Sandys, the trading manager for wine, has already been working on a huge range review, says Swadling, and she is now working towards introducing 50 new lines within the next six weeks. Swadling says both Sandys and Len Hooper, who look after beers and ciders, are vastly experienced in their field. This is great for new girl Lyana Doyle, who joined from Marks and Spencer two months ago as the spirits trading manager.
“Christine and Len have so much knowledge behind them and Lyana is quickly learning the trade and has got all the right credentials - the team is really well balanced.”
The team is also wrapped up in a new local sourcing programme, first trialled in West Sussex and Kent.
“It is important to get local products in our stores,” says Swadling. “We need to make sure we have a good local offering so when a consumer comes in we can give them something different.”
