Tesco is to hire 5,000 new permanent staff to ensure that shelves across its estate are full.

The supermarket chain said each store would get seven new people to work its 24-hour operation to address the problem of out of stocks.

Separately, Tesco’s seasonal staff will be increased by 12,000 over the christmas period.

In all the retailer said it is looking to recruit 8,000 parents, 5,000 over 50s and 4,000 students.

Tesco retail director, David Potts, said:Our stores are busier than ever before and we want to make sure that our customers get the best possible service.”
