How they performed

With the Christmas countdown well and truly on and the party season in full festive swing, the country's c-stores are battling it out to claim the post-party pound with a range of tempting promotions on bacon, bread, baked beans and tea.

As well as providing all ten of the Top Up Shopping items on our list, the Co-operative Group's Westbury store in Wiltshire was offering two packs of unsmoked back bacon for £3, 50% extra free on Tetley tea bags and a two-for-£2.30 deal on 2-litre bottles of Coca-Cola. The small store was also the cheapest for a can of baked beans at 48p. The store also provided the cheapest 10-item shopping basket at £10.09.

The Tesco Express store in Olton, Solihull, was also offering a two-for-£2.30 deal on 2-litre bottles of Coca-Cola. It also had a three-for-89p deal on Mars bars. However, our shopper was given no choice over which flavour of Whiskas catfood to buy for her moggy - it was salmon or salmon.

Texaco's small forecourt was not selling Whiskas catfood, butter blocks or 24-packs of Weetabix, but our shopper said tubs of margarine and smaller packs of cereal were available. The store was, however, running one promotion on Coca-Cola 2-litre bottles, going one better than The Co-operative Group and Tesco Express by offering two bottles for £2.29. Texaco was the most expensive store on our list - offering higher prices than any of the other retailers for all of the items present. Our five stores were clearly in the festive mood as customer service levels at each store were extremely good.
