Scottish wholesaler United Wholesale Grocers is more than doubling the size of its depot in Polmadie.

Work starts on the extension next month and will increase the sales area of the Landmark Wholesale member's depot from 35,000 sq ft to 80,000 sq ft.

MD Nabeel Ramzan said the depot was currently primarily retail cash & carry, with a large Asian food offering. However, the expansion would allow for increased ranges and a move into catering and delivered foodservice.

United Wholesale began life in 1977 in premises of just 2,000 sq ft. It now has two depots Polmadie and a 100,000 sq ft depot at Springburn.

Ramzan added that he was also overseeing investments into a new website, with web ordering functionality, new technology and distribution systems and the wholesaler's retail club, Shop Smart, which is being advertised on TV this Christmas. "Everything that we are doing is aimed at providing a better experience for our customers," he added. "We have increased our ranges across the board and extended our opening hours. Our new strategies are already paying off and we're attracting new customers every day. Last year's turnover was £90m and this year we are on target to reach £115m."

Last month, Ramzan was appointed to the board of Landmark Wholesale. "Nabeel is a strong appointment to the board. His experience will be a great asset and we look forward to working closely with him," said Landmark Wholesale MD Martin Williams.
