Constellation Europe has reshuffled its management team in a drive to streamline the business.

Gaymer Cider Company MD John Mills moves to the new role of senior vice president for European sales, where he will take responsibility for wine sales in the UK and mainland Europe, including Ireland.

He will be replaced by Peter Spencer, senior vice president for UK sales.

The UK and European sales team would merge under Mills' leadership to focus on "simplicity, speed and customer service", said Constellation Europe

"In the past we have run separate processes and teams across different geographies with some duplication of work," said Philip Malpass, vice president of communications for Constellation Europe. "The unification of UK and European sales will allow us to invest our resources into driving sales across a larger geography."

Mills is credited with turning around Gaymer Cider Company's fortunes and transforming it from a business with falling sales to one in growth. In the year to 6 September 2008, sales rose 212% by volume and 234% by value [Nielsen].

He has worked for Matthew Clark and Constellation Europe for 15 years in senior roles including MD of Constellation Wines UK and senior vice president of off-trade sales for Constellation Europe.

Mills said he was confident Spencer was the right man for the Gaymer job. "Peter did a great job of turning around our UK sales ," he said. "He developed a strategy and plan and took the business to market nicely."

Spencer has worked for Matthew Clark and Constellation for more than eight years and for the past four years has led the UK wine team.

As MD of Gaymer he will be responsible for developing Constellation's UK cider sales, as well as overseeing marketing and NPD.

Last month, Constellation cut 50 UK jobs as a result of the downturn. A spokeswoman said the job losses were unrelated to the European sales restructure and no further cuts were planned.
