Tesco store sign

Winner: Tesco

Tesco made it 11 straight wins as Britain’s favourite supermarket and delivered a bruising blow to rival Asda in the process.

The UK’s biggest retailer not only came out top of NIQ’s Homescan survey of more than 12,000 households, it nudged its way into the top three retailers when it came to perception on price. Tesco came third behind the two discounters Aldi and Lidl on price, with Asda, last year’s number three, shunted aside.

Price was seen as the most important factor by shoppers in the survey for the third year in a row, but Tesco led six of the 10 categories in the survey: shopping experience; promotion and offers; convenience; good use of technology; wide choice of products; and availability.

“Tesco has had a stellar year both in terms of total sales, business growth and on this survey,” said Mike Watkins, head of retailer and business insight at NIQ.

Overall, 19% of respondents named Tesco as their favourite supermarket – the same as last year – while Aldi retained second place with 17% and Sainsbury’s stayed third with 13%. M&S added 2% this year to take fourth, also with 13%, though if the two retailers’ trends continue, it’s set to push Sainsbury’s out of the top three next year.

Tesco also won again online, with 26% of respondents voting it the best online retailer. Ocado took second again with 19%, and Sainsbury’s came in third on 14%.
