“A standout winner” is how the judges described Booker’s green entry. With two major customer recycling schemes, as well as industry leadership in tackling issues from food waste to reducing road miles, it walked the walk as well as talked the talk.

No fewer than 7,500 of its customers signed up to a scheme that has seen an additional 2,000 tonnes of cardboard recycled and 1,500 tonnes of CO2 emissions saved. A further 5,000 signed up to a used cooking oil recycling service, which went national last September.

Booker was ranked an impressive 90th in the private sector in the government’s 2011/12 CRC league table, ahead of any grocery wholesaler or retailer. In 2012 it led the IGD group investigating new solutions to distribution and waste issues, and this year it’s at the forefront of industry efforts to increase redistribution of fit-for-purpose food to charity and for animal feed.
