Winner: Waitrose
Waitrose came out on top in the battle against empty shelves – no mean feat considering it has the smallest supermarkets by square footage most weeks.
Five of our Waitrose mystery shoppers went home with full baskets, and it also picked up the most availability wins this year with 19. Its closest rivals Sainsbury’s and Tesco managed three full baskets each – a big drop for Tesco, which won with eight full baskets last year.

Waitrose recorded an average availability score of 93.5%, a substantial improvement from 92% in the previous 12 months. Asda also stands out as the only other retailer to improve its availability this year, from 90.3% to 93.1%. Sainsbury’s overall availability score was the highest at 93.9%, but this was a slight dip on last year’s 94.1%. Availability at last year’s winner Tesco slipped from 94.6% to 93.5% while Morrisons fell from 92.5% to 90.3%.
