The Story

In a year’s time, soft drinks manufacturers of sugary pop will be hit with a new tax. How are brands and retailers preparing for the imposition of the sugar levy in terms of reformulation, product mix, marketing and so on? Which manufacturers will be hardest hit by the new levy? Does the new tax represent an opportunity for anyone?

Key themes:

The market: In spite of all the hoopla over sugary soft drinks, the overall market’s not in bad shape. Value has inched up and volumes are up. What’s driving the growth and which parts of the market are struggling?

Health, redefined: We’ll be exploring how definitions of ‘healthy’ products are changing. Two consumer camps are developing: those who think all sugar is evil and prefer drinks with artificial sweeteners such as Ace K and Aspartame; and those who’d prefer more natural drinks that contain some sugar.
