The first shipment of this season's South African citrus arrived in the UK last week.

Importer Capespan said quality of its first satsumas was very high but predicted a crop 15% smaller than last year. Some 2.2 million cartons are set to be exported to Europe over the season.

"Buyers shouldn't expect huge quantities of easy peelers yet, but it looks as if quality is really good," said Capespan trading director Martin Dunnett. He said there would be fewer deep- cut promotions this year.
