Shoppers popping into a Northern Irish SuperValu store for tea bags will walk away with a free packet of biscuits under a new promotion.

The Perfect Match deal offers a free accompanying product to shoppers buying three discounted items. Its first promotions kicked off the new year with two litres of milk free to customers buying a 500g box of Kellogg’s Special K for £2, reduced from £3.09. A 160-pack of Punjana tea, reduced to £2.49 from £2.99, came with a free packet of Rich Tea biscuits worth £2.15. And a free bottle of SuperValu fabric conditioner was offered to customers who purchased a value box of Daz washing powder for £9, reduced from £13.99.

Together, the three promotions offered a £11.97 discount on products ordinarily priced at £25.46 - a 47% discount across the six items.

SuperValu said it planned to run six more Perfect Match promotions over the year, each featuring three matches and including brands and own label. The deals would be heavily promoted to shoppers through a TV campaign and PoS material at Northern Ireland’s 37 SuperValu stores, including the eight owned by SuperValu wholesaler Musgrave, a spokeswoman said.

“We want to give the customer real value for money on products they’d buy anyway, to ensure they are really saving,” a spokeswoman said. “The key thing is that the first product is a reduced price and then you get a product free with that.”

A similar promotion in 2011 gave away a product on spends of £40.
