The Christmas buildup of promotional activity continues, with the number of promotions in featured space topping 1,600 for the first time since this column began.

The number of offers in each of the top three categories was up on last week, as retailers focused on the key winter treats of confectionery, wine and spirits, which collectively made up over a quarter of the total items on offer.

But another category beginning to move up the chart as the yuletide run-up got going was biscuits, which rose from 7th place to 4th with 15 more offers than last week.

Morrisons' 'price crunch week' certainly embraced biscuits, with 33 of this week's 61 biscuit deals found on its shelves.

With 18 products on promotion, McVitie's was the brand most heavily promoted. The savings were generally steep: 43 of the 61 deals offered a saving of 50% or more.

A shopper planning to crunch through all this week's biscuit deals would pay £96.98, a 39% saving on the £158.06 rsp.

The biggest percentage saving in the top 50 was in oral care this week, with Asda reducing the Oral B Vitality power brush 60% to £10.

The biggest cash saving was £15 on: the Oral B toothbrush, Glenlivet Malt Whisky and Rene Florency champagne.

Soup, the classic winter-warmer, was the only category to enter the top 50, coming in at 37th place from 52nd last time.

Buying all this week's offers would cost £179.35, a 47.7% saving on the £348.91 rsp.
