Until 1 September, children visiting selected stores will be given Wrap-endorsed ‘Surplus Super Hero’ goody bags

Company Shop is hoping to teach young shoppers about the importance of reducing food waste with its six-week summer holiday campaign.

Until 1 September, children visiting the surplus food and household goods redistributor’s Barnsley, Grimsby, Middleton, Corby, St Helens and Washington stores will be given Wrap-endorsed ‘Surplus Super Hero’ goody bags containing educational booklets featuring quizzes, crosswords and stories. Characters including Polly the still perfect peach, Franc the French labelled fish finger, Ollie the over-sized onion and Billie the old branded baked beans have been created to inform kids about the difference between food waste and food surplus.

“This campaign helps families to understand more about redistribution in a fun way – an over-sized onion is still good to eat, so are baked beans with a slightly different label,” explained Helen White, special advisor, household food waste, Wrap.

“With 10.2 million tonnes of food wasted across the supply chain and from our homes every year in the UK, Company Shop and the Surplus Super Heroes have made it their mission to ensure surplus food ends up in bellies, not bins.”
