Richard Walker, Iceland’s new sustainability director, says the company can do more to tackle waste

Iceland needs to do more to tackle food waste in its stores, Food Warehouse MD Richard Walker admitted this week.

In his role as guest editor of The Grocer, Walker said food waste was “a big issue” he was “passionate” about addressing in his new role as director of sustainability, with several initiatives being looked at, including redistributing more surplus food to Company Shop, signing up to Courtauld 2025 and developing an app.

“It is not that difficult, we just need to be more mindful of it and more vocal at communicating what we are doing,” said Walker. “With new technologies coming there’s a more aggressive focus from retailers and a more collaborative approach.”
