The supermarket will make wonky carrots available in all 498 stores nationwide on 22 and 23 December

Morrisons is to give away more than 175,000 wonky carrots for children to give to Father Christmas’s reindeer.

The supermarket will make the carrots available in all 498 stores nationwide on 22 and 23 December. They can be picked up from in-store Morrisons Community Champions.

The move was designed to encourage families to choose wonky veg more often to reduce waste, as the produce would have otherwise been discarded, Morrisons said.

“Christmas is a magical time of year and we want to help our customers celebrate in any way we can,” said Andy Todd, senior carrot buyer at Morrisons.

“Our delicious wonky carrots are hugely popular as they help our British farmers reduce waste and are a cheaper alternative for customers.”

The supermarket said carrot sales increased by 130% in the festive season compared with previous weeks.

“We only hope the reindeer enjoy them as much as our customers do,” said Todd.

To help spread festive cheer, Morrisons will also be offering free mince pies and Christmas cake to all customers that come into its cafés on 19 December, giving them an additional treat to enjoy with their hot and cold drinks.
