An idea to try something new with goat's milk has led to a top award for a struggling small cheese maker. Somerset based John Longman took the top prize in Tesco's inaugural Cheese Challenge with his goats cheese Caerphilly.
The win means his products will now be listed in as many Tesco stores as he can supply.
Longman said: "I wanted to do something else with goat's milk than simply make Cheddar, so I looked up the recipe for Caerphilly in a book and had a go. I was only selling the products at farmers markets' so this is exactly what I need."
Michael Seymour, Tesco's product development manager, said the winner had beaten off competition from 149 other top quality entries: "Right from the start, all the judges had this cheese in their top two. It's absolutely stunning."
