Children’s products have performed particularly well

Ice cream was hot stuff in 2013, with Brits buying the equivalent of 22 million more 500ml tubs than the year before.

Overall volume sales of ice cream rose 3.4% year on year to 341.1 million litres, while value sales grew 6.9% to £839.6m [Kantar Worldpanel 52 w/e 4 December 2013].

The hot summer played a big role in boosting the performance of impulse lines, but sales of luxury ice cream tubs also soared in 2013, rising 18.1% by volume.

Cones were left out in the cold, however, with volumes down 5.5%, and suppliers are now looking to turn the cones market around with NPD such as new Cornetto line Choc’n’Ball.
