SA so sweet on Israel

South Africa is using Israeli technology to develop a Sharon fruit industry aimed at the EU market. Production of the persimmon-style fruit in the Cape has reached 4,000 tonnes a year and should rise by 50% over three years.

Bananas are boosted

The EU is to adopt a banana support regime that will expose producers to stronger market forces. It will give e280m next year to producer groups instead of farmers.

All washed up

British firm Catalix, which uses a chlorine-free, enzyme-based method of washing bagged salad, hopes retailers will adopt the less agressive technique after an e.coli outbreak in the US that was caused by baby spinach.
