A revolutionary potato with added selenium has been launched in Ireland.
The Rooster variety, marketed under the name Selena, went on sale in Superquinn stores across the Republic this week.
Supplier Peter Keogh & Sons developed it in response to the fact Ireland has lower levels of the naturally occurring nutrient selenium.
"We wanted in some ways to re-invent the potato while also ensuring its place as a food for the future," said the company's Tom Keogh.
"We investigated many vitamins and minerals but the micro nutrient selenium stood out because of its fantastic health benefits and the fact there is a deficiency of it in the Irish diet."
Selenium was more easily absorbed and more beneficial to the human body as part of a foodstuff than as a tablet or supplement, Keogh added.
