UK supermarkets are testing a new edible coating manufactured in the United States called Natureseal which extends the life and presentation of freshly cut produce. Products including apple and pear slices pioneered by Mantrose Haeuser will be on display at one of Europe's largest trade exhibitions, Fruit Logistica in Berlin next week. Sliced fruit is dry packed, with the coating allowing it to remain fresh under normal instore refrigeration for at least 14 days. President William Barrie believes that Europe will follow the boom in healthy convenience fruit and vegetables. Natureseal is being developed on cut vegetables such as carrot and celery batons by UK subsidiary Agricoat Industries. Product development manager Simon Matthews will be working with retailers and fresh cut processors to create special formulas for other products. He believes there are applications to benefit distribution to schools. {{FRESH PRODUCE }}
