Ranjit Boparan is expanding his protein empire outside of poultry and fish and into beef and lamb with the purchase of Vion’s UK red meat as well as its poultry operations.

The deal - comprising 11 sites in total - was announced by Boparan’s 2 Sisters Food Group this morning. Financial details were not disclosed.

The Vion businesses had faced significant uncertainty and tough trading in recent months, but today’s acquisition secured a viable future for them, said Boparan. “These businesses will help us to shorten the supply chain for consumers and meet growing demand for British-sourced food.”

The acquisition would help 2 Sisters to deliver further growth and further diversify its ambition to “serve every meal occasion,” a 2 Sisters spokesman added.

2 Sisters started off in primary poultry processing but diversified into fish through the purchase of Harry Ramsden’s and Five Star Fish in 2010 and into manufactured goods through the purchase of Northern Foods in 2011.

Vion’s pork business unit was the subject of a management buyout in December last year.
