Merchant Gourmet to return dulce de leche to UK retailers

The sauce has been absent from the UK for three years

Merchant Gourmet’s dulce de leche is returning to supermarket shelves after a three-year absence.

The company had been forced to drop the product as a result of supply chain problems caused by milk shortages and power cuts in South America, where it was sourced. At the time, online sales had been rising 249% a year, said Merchant Gourmet head of retail Sanjay Davda.

“Since then we have been searching for an alternative and have finally found a new supplier in Spain who produces to the exacting quality we have for all our products,” he said.

The new version rolls out to 237 Asda stores from 21 July (rsp: £3.49/450g).
