Morrisons has announced plans to recruit 3,500 extra staff to meet demand during the Christmas period.

It said it hoped that, despite the economic downturn, the World Cup running alongside traditional festive celebrations would provide a spike in trade greater than previous years. Its number of temporary staff will be 500 higher than last year.

Roles are being advertised across the UK in Morrisons’ stores, food making and logistics operations. Roles include customer assistants, home delivery drivers and machine operatives.

It said a variety of permanent and temporary roles were vacant with full training provided, meaning no prior experience was required.

“Ahead of the festive season, we are looking for 3,500 Christmas helpers to come and join our fast-moving and exciting team on a temporary or permanent basis,” said Morrisons people director Clare Grainger.

“There are lots of great opportunities in our various stores and sites across the UK to help people develop new skills and make and deliver the items our customers love to enjoy when celebrating the festive season.”

Earlier this month, Tesco revealed it was looking for 15,000 temporary staff to serve customers in the Christmas period.
