Why did you decide to go for a career in food? To put it simply, I love food. Marketing has always been an industry I have been interested in. I love the connection between the brand and the consumer and learning how to reach people in innovative, creative, and authentic ways.

After university I had various marketing roles within the entertainment, fashion, and non-profit sectors. However, I quickly learnt that food was the industry I wanted to be in. Not only do I love trying out new foods and exploring different restaurants, but I also could spend hours in the supermarket staring at the numerous products on shelf searching for the next unique flavour (still waiting for pickles and peanut butter to make the cut). Combining my passion for food and experience in marketing only made sense! I then got a job at a vegan sweet start up called Tasty Mates, which kick-started my career in the food industry.

Explain your job to us in a sentence (or two): I manage all of our organic social accounts (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok & Pinterest), from creating content to interacting & engaging with our consumers on a daily basis. Additionally, I manage our paid media channels (social, search, OLV, TV), and collaborate with our media and creative agencies to ensure our media strategies are well-connected to our marketing and business objectives.

What does a typical day look like for you? No two days look the same, which is what I love about my job. From media strategy planning sessions to photography shoots to sampling with consumers on Valentine’s Day, I get to wear many hats and be a part of building a brand that consumers love.

Tell us about how you went about applying for your job. A Mars recruiter reached out to me to tell me about the role and immediately I was keen. I have always loved Kind bars and loved what the company stands for (if you don’t know the story behind Kind, I 100% recommend reading up on it). I applied with my CV and cover letter along with answering the question ‘what does kindness mean to you?’. Then I had my panel interview where I presented on how I would plan a week’s content and to describe and outline how I would approach my first 90 days in the role. I even got my dog involved in a mini photoshoot for the presentation (who doesn’t love some dog content?). The interviewers didn’t just ask me questions about the role and my experience, but they also asked me about myself and what I like doing in my spare time. At the time I was interviewing for quite a few roles and no other company had made me feel like they cared about me as a person the way Kind did. A few weeks later I got the job offer!

What’s the best part about working for a food company? The team. The people are everything. I feel lucky to be working alongside a team who genuinely want the best for you. I also love that Kind has a clear purpose – to make the world a little kinder, one snack and one act at a time. The constant free snacks are definitely a bonus too.

And what’s the biggest misconception people have about working in food & drink? I would say that it’s not as glamorous as one might think. Yes, you do eat lots of food but most of the time you are rolling up your sleeves, whether that’s sending out packages to influencers or waking up early to hand out samples at train stations – all of which I love getting involved with.

What advice would you give to other young people looking to get into the food & drink industry? Bring the passion! People in the industry want to know you are passionate, so go and show them, whether that is a food Instagram account, a YouTube channel touring different restaurants or your own blog with recipe content. Just get stuck in.

What’s your ultimate career dream? To always be working in a creative and purpose-led role. I have always dreamed of having my own oats brand. Maybe one day!
