Asda is kicking off the next rollout of its Express convenience stores with up to 20 new locations planned across October.
It marks the supermarket’s return to opening standalone Express stores after integrating 469 convenience and fuel sites that it acquired from Co-op and EG Group in 2022 and 2023 respectively. The conversion programme completed in Q2 last year.
The 20 new stores will add to the nine Express sites Asda already operates, which were not part of the acquisitions.
These will be a mixture of new builds and existing sites, located in high-footfall urban areas, residential locations, and transport hubs where the retailer has traditionally had limited presence.
It said it aimed to bring Asda’s low prices and great value to even more local communities.
The first Asda Express opening of the 20 new stores will be in Castleford, followed by other locations including in Liverpool and Manchester.
Asda Express stores typically stock up to 3,000 branded and own-label products to suit a broad range of customer needs including ‘top-up’ shops for essential items such as milk and bread, lunch on the go or cooking dinner from scratch.
“We’re thrilled to kick off the next phase of our Express rollout and bring our heritage in delivering outstanding value to more locations across the UK,” said Asda chief supply chain officer David Lepley.
“In just three years, we’ve grown from zero convenience stores to establishing a major presence in the channel, with almost 500 stores by the end of the year. This continued investment reflects the confidence we have in our convenience strategy and our focus on bringing Asda’s low prices to more local communities.”
