Canned goods importers are facing growing pressure from retailers to step up their efforts to widen the availability of ringpull cans.
Domestically produced products have been on the shelves in this format for some time.
But persuading overseas suppliers to switch has been a problem. The excuse has been potential can damage where long distance transportation has shown increased vulnerability of the score line on the ringpull lid.
Improved outer cartons with liners helped but there has been a reluctance to introduce the so called user friendly package on low acid products like canned meats and fish where spoilage could result in serious health risks.
Recent developments on improved internal lacquering seem to be a major step forward and more imported cans with the ringpull lid are expected to appear on the shelves.
The biggest challenge lies on canned meats, particularly 340g tapered Corned Beef which has always been the source of numerous consumer complaints. In the last five years different versions of a ring pull have appeared but all were discontinued often due to cost. If such a can could be developed it would no doubt be welcomed by the trade as the key opening method is outdated and very hazardous.
