Welsh foodservice wholesaler Castell Howell has broken ground on a warehouse expansion at its headquarters as it looks to boost its long-term growth strategy.

The 103,000 sq ft development will feature a state-of-the-art cold store as well as 16,000 sq ft of office suites and amenity space. The site will also incorporate more than 150 car parking spaces, 48 truck parking spaces and eight load bays.

The expansion is taking place on a 7.4-acre site forming part of the wider Cross Hands Food Park in Llanelli, Carmarthenshire. Once complete, the wholesaler said the site would “significantly increase” the wholesaler’s operational efficiency and support rising customer demand.

The project, which is expected to take two years to complete, will not only secure and protect existing jobs, but will also create the platform, capacity and infrastructure needed to support “continued sustainable growth for many years to come”, Castell Howell added.

Speaking of the expansion, director of transport operations Martin Jones said: “Growing up and watching my parents build Castell Howell from such humble beginnings has been incredibly special and to now see the business expanding on this scale, right here in our home county, is something that means a great deal to our whole family.

“This is far more than just a major investment in buildings and infrastructure, it’s an investment in our people, our customers, our community and the future of the business for generations to come.”

It follows the opening of Castell Howell’s seventh depot in January. The 14,000 sq ft site in Merthyr Tydfil has capacity for 3,000 pallets, new refrigeration systems and racking, as well as 14 offices and a service yard.
