Co-op is making it easier for shoppers to sign up to its membership scheme with a new QR code at self-scan checkouts.
The technology initially prompts customers to use their membership card after scanning their items in order to benefit from member price savings, deals and promotions.
If a membership card is not presented, however, the screen will display how much they could have saved by becoming a member.
It will subsequently present a QR code to scan, which “quickly and easily” takes the customer to Co-op’s membership website on their own personal device if they opt to sign up.
The technology has been introduced to around 1,700 stores. It aims to aid Co-op’s membership ambition to reach eight million members by 2030.
“Co-op is committed to creating value for its members and customers, and our tills are a great opportunity to engage with shoppers,” said Co-op operations innovation lead David Tyas.
“We are focused on growing our membership, and the tills now quickly and clearly show customers how they could have saved more, simply by being a member-owner of Co-op.
“With a QR link also directing shoppers to Co-op’s membership webpage via their own device, it makes it easier for customers to become a member and start to benefit from member price savings, promotions and deals.
“We continually explore innovative technology that can improve how we operate, with ease, convenience and the customer experience at the heart of everything we do.”
The technology works similarly to its membership messaging via Co-op’s electronic shelf labels, which launched in August. This feature utilises a built-in near-field communication chip in the ESL, which can be read by most modern smartphones.
Once a shopper taps or waves their mobile phones in proximity of the ESL, the phone’s NFC reader can immediately load a URL directing customers to the Co-op’s membership webpage.
