New on-the-spot fines designed to clamp down on anti-social drinking came into force today.
Retailers caught selling alcohol to a drunken person will face on-the-spot fines of £80 from today, while under-18s attempting to buy alcohol could receive a fine of £50.
Home Office minister Hazel Blears said that the new powers are to build on the No ID No Sale policy being driven by the industry.
She added: “It is good to see the industry playing their part in tackling underage drinking and I strongly support the ‘No ID No Sale’ and ‘Challenge 21’ policies. These clear and simple messages should be adopted by all retailers of alcohol.”
Chief executive of the Association of Convenience Stores, David Rae, welcomed the introduction of the new penalty targeted at the under-18s and said it would help to achieve a balance between the rights and responsibilities of the retailers and the purchases.
