Crime within the convenience sector in Scotland is soaring, according to the Scottish Grocers’ Federation, which officially releases the results of its 2004 crime survey today.
Retail crime increased in every area and across every performance indicator.
The total amount stolen in robberies was up by 1,720% to £211,130; incidents of physical violence doubled; the number of threats of violence was up by 500%; burglaries were up by more than 400%; and there was a 200% rise in staff thefts.
SGF chief executive Scott Landsburgh vowed to keep up the pressure on the Scottish Executive to deal with the growing problem of crime.
“The report confirms the convenience sector continues to be targeted by criminals who see it as a soft touch,” said Landsburgh. “I find it incredible that it has taken so long for something concrete to be done to help the convenience retailer.”
The SGF, Scottish Retail Consortium, Scottish Wholesale Association and the National Federation of Retail Newsagents are launching a campaign, ‘Every Crime, Every Time’, to ensure retail staff report all crime to police. Response rates will become a performance indicator for Scottish police forces.
