The Food and Drink Federation said that a tax on zero-rated foods would be bad for consumers and for the UK economy.
The FDF‘s stance is in response to the British Medical Association which has called on the government to introduce VAT on high fat-foods to combat what it calls the “national obesity epidemic”.
The FDF said a VAT hike of 17.5% on goods such as biscuits, cakes and processed meals would have a serious financial effect on lower income families, as “a large part of their limited income is spent on zero-rated items”.
