A leading food producer has hit out at the government for failing to “maintain a food supply base in the UK”.
Fred Duncan, founder and chairman of Grampian Country Food Group, in an interview with the Sunday Herald, said the government’s attitude was forcing his firm to look abroad.
The company is now looking for opportunities in Latin America, Eastern Europe and Australasia.
He said: “The government have no appetite for maintaining a food supply base in the UK. Their preference is for importing from the new European countries such as Poland. With government policy being what it is, we have to see ourselves as a global sourcing entity.”
He said Grampian was also still tackling the issue of passing on the increased feed costs to the supermarkets. In the meantime, all they could do was improve efficiencies, he added.
