Following the freeze on planning permission for new supermarkets, a number of retailers have tried to cash in by selling existing outlets at inflated prices. They are unlikely to succeed, however. A typical 1,200 sq m superette (just under 4,000 sq ft) is changing hands for between eight to 12 million francs at present (#1 = 7.93 French francs). This approximates to the turnover for two to three months. Some exceptional sites are selling at prices up to 17 million FF - but this is increasingly rare.
