Sir; The George Spencer Memorial Fund has money available to help people in the distributive trades (retailing, wholesaling etc) fulfil their life-long learning ambitions.

There are no age qualification barriers and life-long learning grants are available for a wide variety of development programmes. These include courses leading to a nationally recognised qualification, short courses, online courses, or simply learning materials.

Awards will be not less than one third of the cost of the programme and may cover the whole cost, at the discretion of the trustees. Typical grants are between £500 and £1,000 but can be significantly more than this. Applicants are required to submit a CV and complete an application form with information including details of the development programme, reasons why their employer will not provide funding and why the programme is right for the individual.

As well as life-long learning grants, scholarships are available for research projects connected with the distributive trades.

Application forms are available from: The Secretary, George Spencer Memorial Fund, c/o bssa, Middleton House, 2 Main Road, Middleton Cheney, Banbury OX17 2TN. Email j.willis@bssa.co.uk.
