Claridge's hotel in London was a suitably unique setting this week for what we modestly believe was a unique event The Grocer Gold Awards.
When we launched our new awards scheme at the beginning of the year, we said we wanted to break the mould by creating a different kind of scheme; one that would make a truly positive statement about the great work being done by companies right across the grocery industry. Our business dinner attracted multiple retailers, independent operators, wholesalers and suppliers, who came together with one purpose to celebrate success.
Now, that success took many different forms.
There were awards for the suppliers that buyers thought were the best in the business. There were awards for product innovation. We recognised the great marketing being done across the industry, as well as the initiatives that are leading to real improvements to the bottom line. We gave out awards to the best performers in The Grocer 33 shopping survey. And our top prizes recognised the best independent retail chain and the retailer that the most important people in all our lives, consumers, believe is the country's top grocer.
The key strength of The Grocer is its editorial independence and integrity, and for all these awards we approached the judging criteria and process with the same uncompromising principles. We have worked hard to ensure our scheme really lives up to its name and sets a gold standard for awards of this type.
You will see all our thinking reflected in the features starting on page 38, where we highlight three of the companies that picked up prizes. As you will see, they are worthy winners. Next week we profile three more winners Booths, the Co-operative Group and Sainsbury.
It is all too easy to forget that this is truly a fantastic industry in which to work. And those who gathered at Claridge's this week were able to see plenty of examples of just how fantastic it is.
So many congratulations to our winners and also to all those who made it onto our shortlists you helped make it an evening to remember.
